BFBS: 'A Friend Abroad.' Since 1945 the
British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) has been producing radio programmes (later to include television services as well) for the
British troops in Germany and elsewhere. Oliver Zöllner's book examines and analyses BFBS's output, reception, uses and functions with data collected in 1994 and 1995. It includes an historical
and organisational overview, a detailed format analysis of two weeks' programme output of BFBS Radio 1, secondary analyses of internal surveys, and focus group research among British military personnel
in Germany. Results indicate that forces radio and TV exist,
inter alia, to foster feelings of togetherness and community among soldiers, and to boost the troops' morale — they are the sugar icing on a sometimes bitter pill, as it were. The study concludes with
an outlook on the future of forces broadcasting in Germany. This book has become an historical document by now as BFBS's presence in Germany ended in 2020.
